Tips to Great Service – Every Cruise Ship has standard operating procedures (SOPs) just like in 5 star hotels which have one main motto – “Guest Satisfaction” but there is a way to experience a “Great Service”. In my past, working aboard 2 luxury cruise line brands for close to a decade in Managing Guest Services I have seen a pattern of habits followed by guests (genuinely) who then naturally attract great service which totally enhances their vacation. I would love to share these 9 pointers with you so you can use them on your next cruise vacation and truly enjoy your time on-board..
ON-BOARD TIPS FOR GREAT SERVICE |
Words of Appreciation :-
yes even though the crew is paid to serve you, words of appreciation go a long way. so please be liberal to use words like “Thank you”, “Great Job”, “Perfect” to express your satisfaction and also use words like “Please”, “I would request” whenever you ask for things.
Punctuality :-
The crew are there to serve you and they genuinely intend to give you their best, but they can only do this if things go as planned. Taking their time for granted just does not enable them to provide you the best service but also influences their service to other guests and kills their morale even though they have tried their best. So be nice and be on time.
Language :-
Avoid speaking in your native language in a group. Remember on a cruise ship you are a world traveller. Also please avoid LOUD conversations and be sensitive to other passengers and crew.
Dress well –
all cruise lines have great uniforms for staff. So being dressed well they have a natural tendency to be most hospitable to a well groomed person. Also being well groomed conveys that you like excellence, which is well conveyed to the Crew who then try to match this.
Gestures :-
aboard a cruise ship people come from different nations, Crew and guests likewise. What may be comfortable with one may not be with another. So be sensitive to touching / holding hands during conversation and avoid clapping, tapping on the table or snapping fingers to get attention of a service staff, it speaks very badly of yourself. They usually are pretty attentive to your eye contact or soft gestures. In a situation where you have been waiting too long but have not got their attention, arise from your chair and approach them politely with your requirement.
Tidy up :-
keep your clothes at appropriate places so your room stewardess does not need to go through them… or lets say – Don’t air your dirty laundry.
Remembering Names :-
Referring a person by their name is a wonderful way to ensure great service. it shows good concern and makes a crew member feel more personal than just a Waiter / Stewardess.
Waiting in Line :-
yes yes, you are on vacation, but so are the other passengers. Also when you jump Queues all other passengers look at the staff to regulate the line and so the staff is compelled to not serve you well or ask you to wait for your turn. Also during serving your self at the buffet line – it helps every one to be fast on your choices.
Tipping :-
being generous always attracts good attention. but please remember and follow the above points as tipping is essential but short lived. Also money is not a substitute of saying thank you but rather is a sign of showing that you are thankful.
